Saint Isaac’s cathedral is one of the most magnificent architectural buildings of Saint- Petersburg. It is a unique monument of Russian architecture and is one of the best cathedrals of Europe. This temple ends the century of Russian classicism with dignity.
You can see the gold dome of Saint Isaac’s cathedral from almost any place of the city, and even from suburbia when the weather is fine. The present Saint Isaac’s cathedral is the fourth one, it was build in accordance with the project of O.Monferran in 1858 and became the main work of the French artist.
The total height of the building is 102 meters. Appearance of cathedral includes the biggest collection of Russian monumental paintings of the middle of 19th century, with more than 150 works of art in it. There are more than 300 statues, sculptural compositions and reliefs.
After visiting the museum you may go up the winding stairs to the height of 43 meters, from where you can see the panorama of the great city Saint-Petersburg.
